There’s no doubting that the Twilight Saga is big.
The Stephanie Meyer books have already sold umpteen million copies around the world and the films have propelled their stars (like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) into the upper echelons of Hollywood fame and riches almost overnight. In the opening weekend in the US, the new film grossed nearly $70m and last weekend when limited previews of the third part of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, were screened in the UK, box office returns topped £6m in two days … that’s good going by anyone’s standards.
Such is the excitement about the new film, which goes on general release across the UK today, YouGov have even conducted a poll to gather information about the movie and its fans.
Acording to their survey, almost a quarter of the UK population intends to watch the new Twilight film, either at the cinema or on DVD. Apparently, 8 per cent of Britons polled said they will watch Eclipse at the cinema and 14 per cent said they would watch it, but wait until it comes out on DVD (presumably to enjoy all the extras.) That makes a total of 22 per cent of Brits who say they intend to see the film, a number that rises to a whopping 39 per cent if you isolate the 18-24 year-old demographic … blimey!
YouGov asked a few other questions too.
The consensus amongst Twilight fans (those who have read the books and seen the films) is that the books are a slightly better way to enjoy the stories with 55 per cent saying they’d rather have a paperback than a cinema ticket.
And, yes the big one … who do fans prefer, Team Edward or Team Jacob? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that Edward Cullen (the vampire played by Robert Pattinson) receives more than double the support from fans in his quest for Bella than werewolf Jacob Black, so there.
